The light from Automotive HID bulbs is created by an electrical discharge between two electrodes in an air tight tiny quartz capsule filled with xenon gas, mercury and metal halide salts. The xenon gas allows the bulbs to produce minimally adequate light immediately upon powerup, and accelerates the bulbs' run-up time. The light from Automotive HID bulbs also has a distinct bluish tint when compared with tungsten-filament headlamps.
